CBSE Question Paper Pattern 2026-27: Class 9 to 12 Subject-Wise Guide

The complete CBSE 2026-27 question paper pattern for Classes 9 to 12: the 50-20-30 question split, section-wise marks for Science, Maths, Social Science and English, and what changed with two board exams.

CBSE question paper pattern 2026-27 for Class 9 to 12 with section-wise marks

The CBSE question paper pattern for 2026-27 has not changed from last year. Every theory paper for Classes 9 to 12 follows the same split: 50% competency-based questions, 20% MCQs and 30% short and long answer questions. Class 10 main subjects carry 80 theory marks and Class 12 science subjects carry 70.

CBSE released the 2026-27 sample question papers on 21 September 2026, and each one states there is no change in the question paper design or assessment pattern for this session. This guide puts the full pattern in one place: the question typology, section-wise marks for each major subject, and how the two board exams for Class 10 work.

Has the CBSE question paper pattern changed for 2026-27?

No. The 2026-27 pattern is the same as 2025-26. The 50-20-30 question typology introduced in 2024-25 continues, theory papers remain 3 hours long, and internal choice is still given in selected questions. The biggest change for Class 10 is not the paper design but the number of attempts: students now get two board exams.

What is the 50-20-30 question split?

Every CBSE theory paper is built from three question types:

Question type

Share of marks

What it includes

Competency-based questions

50%

Case-based, source-based and application questions, including competency-focused MCQs

Select-response questions

20%

Direct MCQs and assertion-reason questions

Constructed-response questions

30%

Short answer and long answer questions

Competency-based questions test whether students can apply a concept to a new situation, a passage, a graph or a real-life case, rather than recall a definition.

What about Class 9 and Class 11?

Class 9 and 11 annual exams are set by schools, not by CBSE. Most schools mirror the board design so students practise the real format early: Class 9 papers follow the Class 10 structure, and Class 11 papers follow the Class 12 structure, with the same 50-20-30 split.

How do the two Class 10 board exams work?

Class 10 follows a two-exam system that began in 2025-26:

  • Phase 1 is compulsory for every student and covers all subjects.

  • Phase 2 is optional and can be used to improve marks in up to three subjects among Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages.

  • Internal assessment is done once and counts for both attempts.

  • Same pattern: both exams use the same question paper design, so one set of practice covers both.

Phase 1 is expected from February 2027 and Phase 2 around May 2027. Confirm the dates on the official CBSE date sheet.

How should teachers set papers in this pattern?

For pre-boards and half-yearly exams, use the board design exactly so students get used to it. For unit tests, keep the same 50-20-30 balance but shrink the paper: a 40-mark unit test can still have half its marks from case-based and application questions.
